Thinning hair is a concern we hear about from both our men and women clients who visit Janet St. Paul Studio for Hair and Beauty. Losing about 100 hairs a day is normal. But when you start to notice more hair collecting in your brush and can feel the volume is getting sparse, or see the scalp or hairline becoming more visible, then hair loss becomes worrisome.
What Causes It?
As research has shown, thinning hair is predominantly a genetic trait–around 90% in fact. However, beyond looking at the family tree, other factors can cause thinning hair. This can be:
- Chronic
- Temporary
The skin is the largest organ on the body, which includes the scalp. Ongoing conditions and illness as well as episodic events, such as pregnancy, anemia, or food allergies, can affect the scalp and hair follicles, resulting in intermittent or permanent hair loss.
Should You See a Doctor?
When dramatic or consistent hair loss happens, it’s a good idea to pursue a medical diagnosis. However, before seeing a dermatologist my 29 years behind the chair sharing the experience of my clients, as well as my own health journey informs my suggestion that you first see your general practitioner or gynecologist. It’s important to look at possible underlying conditions such as anemia, thyroid issues, or chronic inflammation in the body, and to get a wide-ranging bloodwork analysis that shows levels over time.
Can it be Reversed?
Good news! As long as the bulb under the skin is not completely dormant, yes thinning hair can be revitalized.
What can be done?
Let’s start with what you should stop doing. It’s important to keep in mind that many popular shampoos and conditioners as well as styling products such as dry shampoos and texture sprays have ingredients that can clog the pores of the scalp. This reduces blood flow as well as restricts healthy hair growth at the root. It’s best to avoid these products. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your stylist.
If you tend to wear ponytails, man buns, or tight-fitting hats regularly, be aware that the chronic tension this puts on the follicle can create hair loss.
Since most awareness begins at home, speak-up if you’re concerned that your hair is showing signs of thinning, then start the conversation with your stylist at the salon. As the Phyto Paris US flagship salon, every stylist at Janet St. Paul Studio for Hair and Beauty is extensively trained to help create a prescriptive scalp and hair care regimen customized for each client’s particular needs. For decades, Phyto Paris has created powerfully effective and safe botanically-based treatments and products for thinning hair.
Get a Treatment Plan & Regimen
Our prescriptive regimen is not a one-and-done approach offered by popularly advertised prescription and over-the-counter hair loss products. Maintaining optimal scalp health is foundational in Phyto Paris’ approach to having beautiful hair. The cornerstone products that help maintain scalp health for all hair types are Phytopolleine and Phyto Detox shampoo.
More specific treatment segments that specifically address hair thickening and hair regeneration are:
- Phytonovathirix Scalp Treatment Ultimate Densifying Treatment for Scalp & Hair
- Phytocyane Densifying Treatment Shampoo for Temporary Hair Thinning
- Phytolium 4 – Densifying Scalp Treatment for Men
Your stylist will be able to thoroughly investigate your scalp with Phyto’s unique scalp camera, so you can see a microview of your scalp and follicles. This progress can then be followed through your next appointments.
Get the Right Haircut
Constructing a style that complements the texture of the hair is a primary pillar of the Janet St. Paul method. Since roughly about half of our clients have finely textured or thin hair, the team will recommend a style that will be best suited for you, with special attention to volumizing, adding movement and structure.
Consider Extensions
Many of our clients enjoy the instantaneous fullness and shape that our customized halo extensions provide. In addition to being an easy-to-apply augmentation, there is very little chance of damage to your natural hair or scalp.
Extensions are one of our specialties. With halo hair extensions there is:
– Easy off/on
– No ongoing maintenance
– Once it is created, can last forever, as long as the hair is taken care of
– Color can change as your natural hair color changes
Custom halo extensions at Janet St. Paul Studio for Hair and Beauty are of superior quality and workmanship, made by our stylist for clients and custom matched to each client’s hair color.
