One thing we all sometimes forget is how stress and life factors impact our overall sense of well-being. As Janet’s hair and beauty career has spanned over 32 years, she has observed how this affects females, especially when hormonal imbalances occur. Hair, skin, and nails are often the first to show signs and symptoms of change.
The changes that our Janet St. Paul Studio for Hair & Beauty Austin Texas salon clients begin to notice include, but are not limited to:
- Hair dullness and limpness
- Hair breakage
- Hair loss
- Itchy or irritated scalp
- Nail splitting or tearing
- Marks or spots in nail beds
Two Scalp Oils You Need To Know
Because diving into good hair health means starting at the surface with a healthy scalp, the professional stylists at Janet St. Paul Studio for Hair & Beauty often recommend these two incredible scalp oils to our clients. They are helpful when these issues arise, and are also recommended as a preventative ritual to keep your scalp properly cleansed and nurtured.
From our favorite, Jonathan Van Ness, comes a powerful remedy for optimal scalp health: JVN Complete Pre-Wash Scalp Oil
JVN Complete Pre-wash Scalp Oil is an incredible, lightweight, nutrient-dense oil for the scalp that soothes the skin and rejuvenates the follicles. It has hemasqualane, a clean ingredient derived from sugar cane, which is superior to silicone, and improves hair strength and health over time. It also contains basil root extract, which helps to prevent hair loss.
This treatment is also for people who have a lot of product build-up or an itchy scalp that needs a little help; a sensitive scalp that feels irritated and needs calming; or for a client that uses tons of dry shampoo and wants the scalp to feel cleaner after shampoo.
It is also great for color-treated hair. For best results, use as directed 2-3 times a week.
How To Use
The best way to use JVN Complete Pre-wash Scalp Oil: Section the hair down to the scalp; Apply to the scalp. Massage into the scalp. Wait 15 min. And complete with two shampoos. JVN Pre-wash Scalp Oil helps to nourish the skin and the bulb, which in turn, helps to create a healthier bed for the hair to grow.
PHYTOPOLLÉINE is a vasodilator, which means it helps open the blood vessels in the scalp and helps to nourish the hair. When the skin on the scalp has more blood flow, circulation is enhanced, and nutrients are more able to reach the bulb at the root of the hair.
PHYTOPOLLÉINE is incredible because it lifts excessive buildup off the hair resulting from dry shampoo use as well as buildup from perspiration. It can be used on color-treated hair, but you should not use it a week prior or after your color treatment appointment.
How To Use
We recommend this as a “before bed” treatment. Section hair down to the scalp in 5 or 6 sections, and apply it as directed to the scalp, massaging it in to the scalp. Then pull your hair up, preferably with a soft hair tie) and go to sleep. The next morning, follow up with two shampoos.
Post-Treatment Shampoo
The best shampoo after either pre-wash scalp oil or Phytopolleine, is Detox shampoo.
This prescriptive shampoo will help to lift any residual debris or oil off the hair. Then follow-up your 2nd shampoo with whatever your hair needs at the moment. Like our internal nutritional needs, our skin and nails are subject to seasonal and situational changes.
If your hair has been feeling a little dry from summer fun or being indoors with winter heat, maybe a healthy dose of moisture is needed. Or if following a recent chemical process your hair could benefit from a strengthening, volumizing shampoo, follow-up the detox with the nurture your hair needs.

Thinking about and protecting your hair from a ‘whole-body’, holistic perspective can make a huge difference. Our bodies run more efficiently when they are fueled with high-integrity nourishment to the best of our ability. This, in turn, helps all aspects of how we look and feel.
When To Contact A Health Professional
If you are experiencing extreme shedding or thinning, it’s always recommended to go to your doctor and have bloodwork done. This can indicate possible anemia, and should definitely be checked out. Hair thinning can also be a result of a thyroid that is out of whack. Also, if you are shedding and having hair issues, and you notice your nails are having issues as well. Have your iron levels checked. So important!
If you’ve been under unrelenting or extreme stress, this can result in a spike in cortisol production for both men and women. We all expect that “we can handle it,” when life throws us curve balls. When the body starts messaging us through physical symptoms such as this, we support our clients seeking extra support when it’s needed. Don’t be afraid to investigate and get the tools you may need to help mitigate stress.
Another culprit of extreme shedding and thinning may also be in how the body metabolizes food and absorption. Often we can have absorption issues in our body and never connect the cause completely to our gut health or food absorption. If you’re concerned or curious that this may be worth investigating, refer to Janet’s blog where she shares some of her favorite health professionals.
